What Does a VIN History Report Include?

Types of Branded Titles

Salvage/Junk

When a car is damaged beyond repair, the insurance company will declare it a total car loss. The DMV will then issue a salvage title and it may not be driven on the street legally or sold unless to a salvage yard for parts.

Lemon

A vehicle with a significant flaw that the manufacturer or dealer has attempted to fix numerous times may receive a lemon branded title under lemon car laws.

Flood Damage

State laws vary, but a vehicle that has been submerged for a specific amount of time has suffered water damage and may receive a flood damage branded title.

Odometer Rollback

When a car is stolen and thieves roll back the odometer, the DMV will issue an odometer rollback title. There is no way of ever telling how many actual miles are on the car.

Hail Damage

A car that suffers hail damage (even just cosmetic) may receive a hail damage branded title.

Rebuilt Title

When a junk or salvage vehicle is fully repaired, and the DMV approves it for legal use, they may issue a rebuilt tile so that any subsequent owners will know the car’s history.

What information can you find by performing a VIN lookup?

Do you offer nationwide coverage?

Will my VIN report show recalls?

Can I find out if a Vehicle Has Been in an Accident?

Using a VIN check or vehicle history report, you can check the vehicle’s accident history. A branded title may indicate an accident. However, not all accidents are reported, so even if the car looks clean, have a mechanic check the used vehicle over before buying.

What is a VIN Decoder?

A VIN decoder breaks down the 17-digit unique identifier (VIN), which can also be found on a window sticker, to extract information such as where the car was manufactured (country, plant, etc.), the engine type, the model year, and other details. For example, the first three numbers represent the World Manufacturer Identifier (WMI) and can tell you the vehicle manufacturer and the country of origin. Numbers 4 through 9 are called the vehicle descriptor section or the vehicle identifier section. This area tells you the vehicle specifications, such as the engine size and type, the body style, the assembly plant, and the model year.
